Tantrum Over! April 29, 2007

Right.. my little tantrum is now over & I have counted to 10 (several times).  Kids were driving me nuts.. specially Kayl… she’s just turned 14 & has developed the attitude from hell!  But it’s all fine now as she’s just got her new phone for her birthday so that should put a smile on her face …….well,  for the time being anyway!!

Parents left on Wednesday night and I’m shattered!  Have just spent two weeks doing all the touristy things & I didn’t realise how tiring it is when you’ve still to do all your normal day to day stuff like cook, clean, get the kids to school etc!  Think I’ll need a holiday myself just to recover!  They seemed to enjoy themselves though & my mum seems happier to have seen for herself where we are living & the quality of life here.  I think she thought that Dubai was not quite as westernised as it is & she was really surprised that you can get pretty much everything here that you can back home.

The night before they left, we took them on a desert safari.  It was so good.  Cam was a bit nervous but the driver, Mujeeb, was fantastic and really made Cam feel safe! The landcruiser picked us up at our house at 4pm then drove out the Hatta road and took us to this little desert shoppy.  We stopped there and got out for a loo break & to buy water or dodgy souviener tat!  We then carried on to a bit of desert which is near the army base and then waited for everyone else to show up.  There must have been about 15 Landcruisers altogether and once everyone had arrived we set off into the desert, all the landcruisers behind one another.  It started off quite calmly, going over small sand dunes & then it picked up once Mujeeb knew that we were all ok with him going a bit faster!  We could see that car infront of us going up a HUGE dune then disappearing so obviously, we followed it!!  It was better than the dune buggy as we could actually open our eyes without sand being blown into them….dad, mum & kayl got some amazing pictures of the other cars coming down behind us.. (will put them all on my Flickr page)  Once we had driven for about 45 mins or so we pulled over to watch the sunset, which cam was not at all interested in, then had a wee more drive over more dunes before being taken to the campsite for the entertainment!  When we arrived there was Camel riding, quad biking & sandboarding and mum decided she was going on a Camel!!!  I couldn’t do anything but laugh!!  Kayl & cam went on one too but me, dad & loz decided we weren’t even gonna go there!!  After that, we sat down on cushions surrounding low tables and had arabic tea & coffee, which was actually quite nice, and you could go and get some henna tattoo’s, get your picture taken in traditional dress, and generally hang out until the bbq was ready!  The bbq itself was different!  It was a traditional arabic bbq and some of the meat was …well…a bit different but in general it was quite nice.  Once we’d had our food, the belly dancer started.  She was really good & got people up to join in!  Once she had finished it was time to go…. we arrived home at around 10pm, knackered but having enjoyed ourself!

Quad Biking! April 1, 2007

We went quad biking out the Hatta road yesterday… well when I say we,  I actually mean the kids!!  Andrew took us out as he’d been there before & Kayleigh, Lauren, Emily (Kayleigh’s pal) & Cameron all went off on the quads.  Cam was a wee bit nervous with the bigger quads so he decided to swap over to the smaller ones.  The girls took off on the quads across the sand dunes….Emily was a complete speed freak… she’s got her own quad bike too so she’s had heaps of experience!  K & L however were a wee bit more cautious but they really enjoyed it until Lauren took out a fence!  She was headed straight for the fence & for some reason didn’t steer away from it and crashed head on and flipped over the handle bars!!  She was fine and got back on & off she went again!! Once they were done with the quads, Andrew decided we were going in this big 8 seater dune buggy.  I thought that it would be good to go up the dunes to see the views & didn’t think that it would be too scary… how wrong was I??!!  We all got strapped in and off we went.  It was quite fast but it was pretty tame to start off with.  We went over a few smallish dunes and then the guide took us right up the huge dunes……there are only 3 words to describe this… oh my god.  In fact make that 4 words… oh my  #*?!*#@  god!!  I was screaming like a kid as the guide just teetered on the edge of this massive dune then went sideways down….honestly I thought we were going to roll the thing!!  This carried on for the next 10 minutes & I have never screamed so much… it beats a white knuckle ride hands down.  Andrew was being so macho (as usual) until we got to the biggest dune and again teetered over the edge before going straight down at full speed.  He actually admitted that he nearly poo’d himself at this point!!  It was good fun but had to go straight home for a shower as we were covered in sand… it was everywhere (I think i took half of it home in my bra & knickers!!)  and before any of you smart arses say it, yes that would be a LOT of sand!!

Speaking of sand… the garden is coming along nicely (thank god!)  The gardeners delivered all the plants yesterday & the grass got delivered today & is in the process of being laid as I type!!  I’m thinking it should be finished by the end of the week at the latest (hopefully!)
